Walmart Is Employing Blockchain Tech to Make Shipping &#039Smarter&#039

A new patent filing finds retail giant Walmart in search of to utilize blockchain technology to perfect a smarter&nbsppackage delivery tracking method.

In an application released by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Workplace (USPTO) on Thursday, Walmart describes a “wise package” that would incorporate a device which would record details on a blockchain concerning the contents of the package, its environmental circumstances, its place and much more. It also suggests that its intelligent package could be utilized in tandem with other emerging technologies which includes “autonomous vehicles,” such as drones.

The patent was 1st submitted in August of 2017, and notably builds on a filing&nbspWalmart submitted for a blockchain-based drone package delivery tracking program last year.

Walmart explains in the filing that on-line shopping has produced shipping challenges for retailers, particularly with regard to perishable goods requiring temperature handle, as a result necessitating additional innovation.

Walmart writes in the application:

“These on the internet clients several occasions seek to obtain things that may possibly demand a controlled environment and additional seek to have greater security in the shipping packaging that the things are shipped in.”

The application states that the blockchain component will be encrypted into the device, and will have “crucial addresses along the chain of [the package’s] custody, like hashing with a seller private crucial address, a courier private essential address and a buyer private key address.”

In addition to its delivery drone aspirations, Walmart has sought to apply blockchain technologies to other locations of its enterprise.

Last year, it joined Kroger, Nestle and other food market firms in a partnership with IBM to use the blockchain to enhance food traceability. It backed a comparable work in China with JD.com in December.
